Case Study: McIlhinney for State Senate

In 2006, Chuck McIlhinney was running for an open state Senate seat in Pennsylvania's 10th District, one of the state's most swing districts. Polling and other factors showed that voters were dissatisfied with the national Republican Party and willing to abandon state and local candidates, including McIlhinney, when they went to the polls in the fall.

Pathfinder developed a comprehensive voter identification program designed to identify "soft" Republicans who were willing to vote Democratic in the state Senate race, as well as the issues of most importance to them in deciding their vote. These voters were then contacted through both phone and mail, and from various messengers, to persuade them to remain with the Republican candidate in the state Senate race.

On Election Day, McIlhinney won by 1.5% while the Republican gubernatorial candidate and incumbent U.S. Senator and U.S. Congressman above him on the ballot lost.
